Woman Arrested After Biting Deputy

An Iron City woman was arrested on Monday after she allegedly bit a deputy.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that deputies were called to the South Walnut Road home just before noon. They had been dispatched to intervene in a family dispute.

The victim told deputies she had lived at the residence for the past four years but had recently moved out. She said that she was attempting to retrieve the remainder of her belongings when she became involved in an altercation with her former roommate, Drema Kay Hand.

Deputies arranged with Hand to allow the victim to collect her belongings, however they report that she remained irate, lunging at her as she entered the house. Deputies had Hand sit on the couch however she asked repeatedly that she be allowed to wait in her bedroom.

When he relented, the deputy said Hand began to walk toward her room. As she passed the victim’s room, he reports that she began yelling and rushing toward her.

Hand was physically removed from the room, into the hallway where she was taken into custody. Deputies report that she was very uncooperative, refusing to place her hands behind her back.

As they were attempting to handcuff her, they report that Hand leaned forward and bit a deputy on the right arm. They report that she continued to struggle throughout the arrest.

Hand was incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center under charges of assault and resisting arrest. She is scheduled for an August 6, 2013 appearance in General Sessions Court.
